One of the most vitally important systems in the body, the craniosacral system is comprised of the skull, vertebral column, brain and spinal column. They all work together in a well orchestrated manner. The craniosacral system contracts and expands slightly, in a subtle rhythmic cycle, six to twelve times per minute. The twenty two bones of the skull are constantly being moved by the cranial rhythmic impulse, which facilitates the constant flow of cerebrospinal fluid between the brain and the spinal cord.
The proper mobility of the bones of the skull is important to maintain good health. If the cranial bones become stuck, jammed together, or become 'frozen in place', the entire spinal column, craniosacral system, and nervous system are adversely affected. Therapy involves gentle manipulations of the sutures of the skull to keep them flexible.
